Type "-t" or "-temper" and that will upgrade the item in the top-left slot.
You can also type "-t x" or "-temper x" where x is a number between 1 and 6. The item in the slot will be upgraded as follow:

Altar Method:
1. Give your Altar the item you want to upgrade.
2. Click the icon for upgrading (the anvil) at the altar.
3. Give the item back to your hero.
4. Enjoy the better item!
