Random idea to speed up game start a bit:
Normally it's a 90 second countdown. But half the people dont hit ready so its a long time waiting for it to time out.
Proposed solution: Assuming everyone has something selected, the game auto starts after 10 seconds of no changes.

In a similar noob-friendly suggestion, could you force a -o at 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 minutes and so on, for level 0 players? Maybe some kind of message about you control x they control y?
I think it would help people catch on to the whole obelisk thing
EDIT: some text triggered about hit bottom right to confirm your selection after their first hero would also help, even if you don't go with the auto-start. (autostart should have a warning). In a similar vein, you could announce after 5 seconds that everyone has picked, but x y z haven't confirmed and the game is waiting on them (and potentially the game will start in another 5 seconds if nobody changes).
