I've really been shocked how much they've let valve use IP taken straight from WC3 so far, espeicaly with how their hyping Blizzard DOTA so much.

Of course, by waiting this long and saying they weren't going to they could have lost their rights.

Blizzard will clearly win this one. Money and all that aside, the EULA pretty much says anything created in the wc3 game is blizzard property regardless of who made it or for what purpose.

I thought it said that too but after re-reading the EULA I can't actualy find where it says that. There is a clause saying you can't sell anything made in it without their permission and some other general IP protection stuff.

I'd also like to note this actualy isn't Blizzard starting a fight, its actually valve's doing. By registering it they end up threatening Blizzard DOTA, which they seem to be pushing really hard.

Hard to say, they're actually pushing Blizz DOTA really hard. Certainly a lot of the shit they showed at blizzcon was terrible, but they may realize that before release - and release looks quite a ways off.

They think its fine, why would they have any reason to change anything. They have already said they want it to be a fun, casual experience which it is in its current state. I am sure some people will find it really fun, but personally I believe it is going to suck.
