Item Additions: Sockets

+5 Helms are getting sockets, which I presume everyone knows basicaly how they work. There are 3 gem types: Heroism, Leadership, and Knowledge. Rough guidelines are Heroism will focus more on hero combat, Leadership more on promoting or killing spawns, and Knowledge is more flexible effects. Items retain their base stats plus gain an additional effect of some sort (some unique, some just auras). Items also get new names but retain the same icon so you know where they came from.

This may get expanded beyond helms at some point (gloves are the prime canidate) but rather unlikely to be broadly applied. More probable in combination with some special items to be added or new artifacts.

If you had your way there wouldn't even be items or other interesting things.

EotA's goal is to add so much stuff until WC3 finally explodes. Items have been banal for too long, so you should have expected this coming.

So you stole ideas from mmos to put into your game?

Yes exactly.

Sockets aren't all that unique by now, and its the one layer of crafting items I approve of, so it seemed appropriate to add to EotA.

:D Awesome idea, really can't wait to see the effects of the gems. I think the sockets in the gloves sounds great aswell!

I think of gems/sockets as a way of adding to the customization of the character. Another way to customize the character is to allow the user to choose between item effects. Of course, adding more to the game in this way requires more attention to balancing stats and effects since any minor imbalances will grow as available stats/effects grow. Overall, I like this addition to the game.

The mechanic is interesting, but I think it might not get used too much due to investing a lot of gold into the helm items to get them to +5 and the 1200 gold & 5 crystal needed to buy a gem.

Also, it would be nice if you can post a list of the helm items and give a mini description of how each gem enhances them on the forum.

Yea I'm debating on dropping prices for helms. I don't want them to be too cheap, but at the moment they're the most expensive standard items.

I could, but that would be cheating.

How can it be considered cheating if anyone who has free time could make that list for himself?

Agreed.

FYI, I'm going to be adding effect descriptions on the +5 helms for what the gems produce. Was suppose to go in today's version but I forgot+ran out of time.
