Domain name semi-contest

#1 Post by DarnYak »

We're likely moving the site soon (again, but preserving data), and getting a real domain name. EotA.com/net/org is taken, and no name sticks out to me as a clear alternative, so if you have a good idea, post it in this thread and it might get selected. No prizes for winning though.

So did I. I find it mildly worrying.

Anyway, http://www.eota-twilight.com (net/org)?
maybe even http://www.claneota

The only problem with that though, is there is more than just twilight for EotA, but there's a problem with War3ota.com for my suggestion, if he plans on tapping into Stacraft 2. ^_^

Maybe since EotA may never touch executable format, how about EotA-Mod.com?

.com is under construction
.net is something about education and Bill Cosby
.org is parked by GoDaddy.com

Okay just to say this I've though about it for a while. Clan EotA isn't the only group of people who play EotA (surprisingly). So if we name the forums "Clan EotA forums" or make the webpage "ClanEotA.com" it's going to seem like an exclusive club and alienate people and make them not want to sign up.

Keep in mind that there's nothing stopping us from having two domains, one for the map, and one for the clan (but having the clan just be a subsection on the map site would probably be more logical). There's also nothing preventing us from having multiple domains with one hosting the site, and the other just being redirects. Domains aren't free (at least not "real" domains), but they're not particularly expensive either. I don't think Yak should have to pay for more than one, but anybody else is free to buy up additional domains for redirection (or for hosting goatse, or whatever).

By the way, .com/.net/.org are taken (when it comes to four-letter domains, good luck), but there are many other TLDs available, including .us, as someone (Tox?) pointed out on the channel. Then there are all the other country code TLDs: .biz, .bz, .ru, .uk, .eu, to name a few, and my personal favorite, .va.

Anyone in a clan can just have access to a "Clan Members only" section.
But, Yak paying for a domain? I don't think that's gonna happen >>

It's under $10/year: He said he would. If not, I offered to do so (I'm the new host, if you're wondering).

How long does this contest go for? We should make the finalists into a poll.
