Things I Learned From Pong...
This weekend, we made Pong. It was supposed to be a learning exercise for me to teach one of the guys about OOP design, but he ended up teaching me more than I ever expected.
I've been doing "Best Practices" for the past 3 years and not really producing anything. I'm sick of it, and my excuse has always been that I'm just not using the right design. I forgot that programming is an art, not a science, and you have to let the code evolve naturally.
Worse than 3 years wasted is the fact that I've passed this trait on to my co-worker and best friend, who sort of sees me as a mentor. Between my preaching of "Proper OO" and school's indoctrination of heavy, document-driven development, I think he might be more lost than I am.
My goal: Make small but complete games at regular intervals, tossing up a giant "Fuck You" to Best Practices.
