Forum Guidelines

Postby Emufarmers » July 22nd, 2007, 11:00 am

I'm calling these "guidelines" rather than "rules," simply because I'm only in charge here insofar as the site and forums are concerned, and because I think people will appreciate suggestions more than dictates.

1. Remember that we're all humans here: You don't have to be friends with or even like everybody, but you must treat others with respect. It's ok to disagree with someone, and it's ok to make your disagreement known, but don't be unnecessarily harsh or cruel.

2. Keep things reasonable: Signatures shouldn't be so large that they stretch the page, nor so garish that they distract from the post. There are limits on image sizes, but don't try to get around them. Avoid unnecessary colors, smilies, links, or formatting in your posts. All those things have uses, but they can also be disruptive if misused. No obnoxious or irritating avatars.

3. Listen to staff: Don't make a scene. If a moderator or administrator tells you to do or not do something, you should comply. If you disagree, then say so in a private message (not in a post). If you can't resolve the issue with a given moderator, or if you feel he or she is treating you unfairly, PM an administrator. You can PM any administrator at any time, but remember that DarnYak would probably prefer not to get involved in personal disputes—I would contact him for such matters only as a last resort.

4. Remember that we [try to] treat everybody equally. If you're in the clan, don't use that to bully outsiders, and if you're a shaman, don't bully clan members with your status.

5. Remember that people outside the clan visit these forums: We don't want to make a bad impression on visitors.

6. Don't do something just to try to get around these guidelines: They're intentionally elastic and short. Don't take advantage of that.

Uh, yes, that's what it says. If you have a complaint about a specific post or group of posts, then contact me in private.

There are guidelines. Guidelines, 'the law', that reasonable and rational persons follow. When a reasonable and rational person fails to follow these guidelines 'the law', they are reprimanded accordingly.

I would rather say people try to make the most out of the borders of the law and go over them whenever they can, in fact they are not always succesful.
And on the other side they try to make it look like they are nice persons who would never dare to step over the borders of law.

To avoid their attempts to go over the borders of law, they are thretened by penalties. In order to avoid these punishment people just think of more clever ways to get around the law and thats why the law-system has become so complicated. To avoid people of getting around it.

In conclusion they dont follow the law because they want to, rather because they are forced to.

And this is what i wanted to point out with my earlier post.

Just now happened to glance at these, and most forums have an elastic clause, since they pick mods and up they trust not to abuse it, that normally says something like: "Moderators can change these rules at their discretion to keep order in the forums..." And along that line, that way it helps to prevent the members countering with "That's in no way stated in the rules and bla bla bla."

Really helps keep people happy unless one of the mods abuses it, like punishing someone for saying "Pie is better than..." or stuff that is in no way disruptive.

Sarcasm is conveyed often times by tone of voice. Since writing does not have definite tones because of different views, I suggest we from now on color sarcasm blue as in other forums.

Question: Did these rules just burn to the ground, or is this kinda argument across all threads the usual?
"L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-op games. . ." Like L4D promised to hand us new maps, survivors, and zombies? We've seen how that works.

People are on too good terms with the mods here, thats why they dont take actions against certain issues involving less charismatic forum members.

It wasn't always as bad as this in the past, but since about 2 years ago it's gotten quite horrible. To be quite frank, the moderators do a half-assed job of things; they delete threads that really offend him and posts that endanger the forums, but they never hand out proper bans or warnings like you'd see on any other site. It'd be nice to see the rules more enforced since coming on here is almost like a chore, or worse, like going onto 7chan or something.
